Pilot Gert Huzink demonstrated a huge degree of self-reflection during the 3rd stage of the Rally Morocco. He and his crew did not want to risk more damage to the equipment, so he returned deliberately to the bivouac earlier from the first place.
"We are in Morocco mainly to complete the harshest stress tests of our special truck, which has undergone significant modifications. None of the so much needed tests (and there was no space for it) can match real racing kilometers. On top of it there is no space for more testing. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to race at a rally in Morocco and were saying from the beginning that any result would be just a big bonus. Today, Gert proved our words, when he turned around and returned to the bivouac from the stage," Mario Kress, the author of the MKR Adventure project and lead designer of the North Bohemian Renault truck of the Dutch team Riwald, explained the situation.
Although Gert Huzink's crew did very well from the beginning and were in the head of the live ranking, they deliberately decided not to finish Monday's 3rd stage. "Gert complained that the front shock absorbers did not work as they should. He was aware that if he continued with full speed, he would only do more unnecessary damage. So it was more interesting to go back and do more work on the truck. We did a lot of work with the boys on the suspension and there are lots of tests and adjustments on the spot. We try to prepare the truck for the Dakar the best we can. The goal is to test as much as possible," said Mario Kress.
Huzink's special truck is not out of the race. He will continue with the penalty on Tuesday's 4th stage. During it, the crews will cover a total of five hundred and thirty kilometers, including nearly three hundred and forty kilometers of timed special sections.
